Problem
Waste reduction is essential for Europe’s climate transition. Composites, increasingly used in strategic sectors, are seeing growing adoption of the LRI process, which is valued for its efficiency, quality, and cost. In Europe, one-third of the 2.4 million tons of composites produced annually are manufactured using infusion.
The specific objectives of the project
Main objective: to develop a fast, reliable, and human-oriented quality control solution (FLASH) to detect defects in LRI (Liquid Resin Infusion) production processes in a timely manner.
Technologies used: use of advanced inspection and monitoring techniques (FLASH-IM) in the critical stages of preforming and infusion.
Data analysis: recovery of key process parameters to estimate defect severity using an artificial intelligence-based system (FLASH-DSET).
Decision support: integrated decision support system (FLASH-DSS) that guides the operator in performing immediate and targeted corrective actions, using real-time FF/FB (feedforward/feedback) control strategies.
Ultimate goal: to achieve zero-defect, zero-waste, first-time-right production, improving sustainability and reducing waste of polymer composite materials.
Smart sharing: promoting the sharing of interoperable and sovereign data between different production sites to increase the efficiency and competitiveness of the composites industry.
The results
Demonstrate a significant increase in sustainable production through improved control systems and non-destructive monitoring methods;
Develop methodologies and tools to prevent the occurrence of defects at the component level and their spread to the system level;
Create new diagnostic methods for in situ monitoring of industrial production;
Ensuring efficient use of materials, repair strategies, and reduction of costs and production times.
The role of MADE4.0
Simulation and modeling (digital twins) covering the level of material processing up to the production system;
Data analysis, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and implementation of digital platforms for data management and sharing.
