total savings over 5 years

Over five years, total savings of approximately €761,000 are expected, resulting from reductions in energy costs, reworking costs, and CO₂ compensation.

–6%

energy consumption and production waste

Process optimization based on real-time data leads to an estimated 6% reduction in energy consumption and production waste.

Introduction

ArcelorMittal is one of the world’s leading steel companies. In Italy, it operates two plants in Avellino and Canossa which specialise in processing sheet metal for use in packaging and household appliances. The company is renowned for its high level of automation and commitment to sustainable processes.

The problem

ArcelorMittal Avellino and Canossa Spa required sophisticated tools to monitor and minimise the environmental impact of their production processes. In particular, accurately attributing energy consumption, raw material use and waste generation to each production batch was difficult. This hindered process optimisation and prevented the full exploitation of environmental performance.

The solution

With the support of MADE4.0, ArcelorMittal Avellino and Canossa Spa have launched a digital transformation project with a focus on sustainability. They have developed an integrated platform that can acquire, process and analyse data from the Avellino and Canossa plants in real time.

The infrastructure enables the consumption, waste and environmental impact indicators of each production batch to be tracked. Initially validated on pilot lines, the solution was then extended to the entire production process, promoting more efficient and conscientious resource management.

Technologies

IoT Edge Gateway for real-time data collection

Integration with existing MES system

ESG platform for calculating environmental footprint

Advanced human-machine interfaces for decision support on the production line

Data analysis and algorithms for energy optimization

Impacts

The project supports ArcelorMittal Avellino and Canossa Spa in their efforts to make their production processes more sustainable, thereby reducing the ecological footprint of their Italian plants. Digital integration of process data improves consumption control and reduces waste, thereby strengthening the companies’ competitiveness in an increasingly sustainability-focused market. This initiative can also be replicated in other group plants.

“The results achieved fully met the project objectives. The collaboration with MADE stood out for its high level of expertise, professionalism, and technical support.”
