Artificial Intelligence

SEA (Società Esercizi Aeroportuali di Milano) is a leading company in managing and developing Milan’s airport infrastructures, operating with the aim of ensuring efficiency, safety, and innovation in airport services. With consolidated expertise in the sector and a strong drive toward digital transformation, SEA is committed to continuously improving passenger experience and airline operations by leveraging cutting-edge technologies and sustainability.

The problem

The “airport logbook” (GdS) is a critical tool for tracking and managing airport operations, including information on aircraft, passenger, and cargo movements. However, the current manual process carries a high risk of errors, inefficiencies, and delays in data availability, impacting safety, costs, and operational coordination. Automating this process is essential to ensure greater accuracy and to support more effective airport resource management.

The solution

The project aims to develop an advanced artificial intelligence (AI)-based system for the automated compilation of the GdS. This system will rely on extracting and classifying data from heterogeneous sources, both structured and unstructured. The solution will include an experimental laboratory phase to validate the developed models, paving the way for the implementation of an industrialized product.

Technologies Used

  • Predictive models using machine learning to estimate the reliability of received information (often incomplete or contradictory);
  • Cost optimization model, aimed at minimizing the total cost associated with information management by SEA operators;
  • Dedicated IT infrastructures: experimental environment configured for training, validation, and testing of developed solutions.

Desired Impacts

The project aims to bring significant change to SEA’s airport operations, improving internal management and the overall experience for airport system users. Expected impacts include:

  • Increased operational efficiency: through reduced time and errors associated with manual GdS management;
  • Reduction in human errors during GdS compilation;
  • Technological advancement: laying the foundation for further innovations in airport systems and fostering greater technological integration.

Benefits for the company

Implementing the proposed solution will bring numerous advantages to SEA in terms of operational efficiency and competitiveness, including:

  • Cost optimization: by reducing time wastage and inefficiencies related to manual work;
  • Improved safety: ensuring more precise and reliable management of critical information;
  • Enhanced competitiveness: positioning SEA as a technological leader in the airport sector through the adoption of innovative solutions;
  • Operational sustainability: improving the ability to manage resources more effectively and responsibly.
