Datalogic S.p.A. is a leading company in industrial automation solutions, headquartered in Lippo, Italy, with a global presence. With a team of over 3,000 employees, Datalogic is recognized for its commitment to technological innovation and production infrastructure security.
The problem
Industry 4.0 has made OT (Operational Technology) infrastructures more connected and, therefore, more vulnerable to cyberattacks. To ensure the security and resilience of its production infrastructure, Datalogic has identified the need to upgrade its cybersecurity level, particularly by complying with IEC 62443 international security standards. Cyber risks targeting essential OT operations could jeopardize operational continuity and data protection, making advanced security strategies crucial.
The solution
The OT Cyber Security Assessment project outlines a structured path to identify and mitigate vulnerabilities in OT infrastructure, enhancing security levels.
- Assessment Phase: The initial evaluation, conducted on two production sites, will establish a security baseline, including vulnerability management. The OT network architecture, existing issues, and current security levels will be analyzed.
- Vulnerability Assessment and Risk Analysis: This phase involves the use of specific OT vulnerability scanners, along with threat and risk analyses of peripheral systems, to gain a comprehensive view of weaknesses.
- Security Evolution Plan: Once the target security level is defined, a plan will be developed, encompassing technological interventions, governance measures, and architectural improvements to mitigate identified issues.
Technologies
The technologies used include advanced OT vulnerability assessment tools and AI-based threat detection systems. These will enable real-time monitoring and reduce response times to security incidents. The IEC 62443 standard will guide the entire adaptation and risk management process.
Impacts
- Increased OT infrastructure resilience, ensuring operational continuity even in case of cyberattacks or failures.
- Improved security incident management through advanced monitoring systems, enabling quicker and more effective responses to attacks.
- Compliance with international standards to align OT security with global best practices, enhancing corporate credibility.
Benefits for the company
- Reduced vulnerabilities and enhanced protection for critical infrastructures, minimizing risks to production continuity.
- Reputation enhancement for Datalogic, demonstrating a concrete commitment to OT security, crucial for customers, partners, and regulators.
- Strengthened internal capabilities through new cybersecurity skills and methodologies, applicable to all production sites, fostering a corporate culture of security.
