The problem
Urban and suburban roads are often characterized by inadequate maintenance and inefficient management of resources allocated to repaire road surface anomalies. The absence of an integrated and automated system for monitoring the quality of road surface leads to high costs, delayed interventions, and safety risks for road users. Currently, road monitoring is carried out in a non-uniform manner, often based on manual reports from motorists or expensive data collection campaigns. This approach is not only poorly scalable but also results in high variability in the quality of the information collected. Furthermore, the lack of up-to-date and accurate data makes it difficult to effectively plan maintenance activities, increasing the risk of road accidents and vehicle damage for both private citizens and industrial freight transport.
The solution
As part of the innovation project with MADE, Easyvia proposes an advanced technological solution for monitoring and maintaining roads that allows:
- Real-time detection of road surface anomalies through smart sensors that can be installed on traditional vehicles
- Collection and analysis of anomaly data using artificial intelligence algorithms (e.g., 3D reconstruction of the Digital Twin of the anomaly)
- Access to a digital map of road surface anomalies providing details on the entire anomaly lifecycle
- Optimization of road maintenance activities with more accurate estimates of maintenance intervention costs and monitoring of such interventions
The impacts
The proposed solution allows for:
- Reducing road maintenance costs by leveraging data that enables planning and optimization of interventions
- Improving the quality of roads and repair times for potholes
- Increasing the safety and comfort of road network users
- Raising awareness among businesses and citizens about road quality and social responsibility.
Technologies used
The Easyvia platform consists of three main components:
- On-edge platform: The on-edge solution is based on a combination of sensors capable of performing high-frequency measurements to identify and measure road anomalies and send the details to the cloud.
- IoT & AI platform: The software solution consists of a cloud-based IoT platform with an event-driven microservices architecture powered by AI algorithms. These algorithms classify road anomalies based on their shape/size using 3D reconstruction and recommend the best way to resolve anomalies in terms of material quantity and action strategy.
- Digital map: A web portal where you can navigate the area of interest on a map and view details of road anomalies by clicking on the relevant markers.
