VIBESS - Wind-induced vibration control on slider structure

dimension and location

Small Enterprise - Milano (MI)

PARTNER

Politecnico di Milano

ISAAC S.r.l. develops smart technologies for seismic protection and structural monitoring of buildings and infrastructure.

The problem

Slender structures, such as large span bridge towers, high-rise buildings, and lattice structures, are subject to Wind Induced Vibration (WIV). These transverse oscillations can adversely affect the structural design and comfort of inhabitants, causing safety and usability issues for structures.

The solution

Development of a device, based on Active Mass Damper (AMD) technology, and an algorithm for active monitoring and control of Wind Induced Vibration (WIV), exploiting knowledge of the physical phenomena of wind-structure interaction.

Technologies

  1. Active Mass Damper (AMD): Active damping systems to reduce wind-induced oscillations.
  2. Advanced control algorithms: Specific control logic to mitigate WIVs with optimized efficiency.
  3. Wind tunnel testing and numerical simulations: Wind tunnel testing and numerical simulations to fine-tune and validate the system.

Desired Impacts

  1. Reduction of structural vibration: Improved stability and comfort of slender structures.
  2. Technological innovation: Introduction of advanced active damping techniques in structural engineering.
  3. Market expansion: New market opportunities for applications in structures subject to WIV.

Benefits for the company

  • Competitiveness: Increased competitiveness by offering innovative solutions for structural vibration control.
  • Market Expansion: Opportunity to cross-sell to existing customers and new markets, such as towers and lattice structures.
  • Sustainability: Improved sustainability by avoiding demolition and reconstruction, contributing to a more resilient and sustainable society.
