PASSO

Introduction

Medere S.r.l. is an innovative start-up. Based in Rome and Palestrina, the company stands out for its application of advanced technologies such as 3D printing, CAD design and biomechanical analysis for the development of customised medical devices.

The problem

The analysis of musculoskeletal disorders currently involves the use and monitoring of data obtained through patient gait analysis sessions carried out in specialised laboratories. In addition, sensor-equipped insoles are typically used to collect data for a limited period of time, without storage capacity. Therefore, these solutions are used exclusively during clinical examinations and do not allow for remote patient monitoring.

Technologies

Additive manufacturing: a 3D-printed insole is produced with the typical advantages of this technique, namely:

Digital transfer of information using 3D printing. Just a few images and videos of the patient’s foot are enough to create a customised model.

Customisation of the solution, a footbed made based on the individual patient’s needs, starting from the anatomical model and any prescription from the clinician.

IoT: remote control. Sensors are inserted into this insole to monitor posture and continuously perform the analyses typically carried out during gait analysis sessions in dedicated laboratories. These systems collect information for diagnostic analysis of patients’ gait.

Impacts

Thanks to the IoT, diagnostics can be enabled: information and databases useful for this purpose are collected. In addition, the concept of product-service is enabled: the insole ‘communicates’, and the information thus becomes the basis for the provision of dedicated services (therapeutic control and CRM).

Benefits for the company

– The possibility of creating a prototype that can subsequently be marketed.

– Increased internal skills.

– Improved positioning in the innovation landscape. The company gains access to a developing market and can build leadership in this field.

Additive technologies for autonomy and motor well-being

Introduction

U&O S.r.l. is an Italian company in the MedTech sector, specializing in the design and manufacture of innovative medical exoskeletons.

The problem

Life expectancy in developed countries is increasing, as is the number of elderly people. One of this group’s needs is the ability to move around independently in different environments, compensating for mobility limitations caused by ageing. Those with mobility difficulties can rely on walking aids such as crutches, walkers and wheelchairs, or on the help of social and healthcare workers, family members or friends.

Technologies

Prototype exoskeleton supporting the musculoskeletal system of the lower limbs.

Production of components using additive manufacturing to reduce their weight.

This particular device provides the person wearing it with immediate walking support. The system makes movement less energy-intensive.

Desired impacts

Less energy expenditure by caregivers and clinical staff supporting walking.

Greater motor autonomy.

Improvement of physical walking performance.

3D printing allows for greater customisation of devices.

Preventing complications related to immobility, hypomobility and joint stiffness.

Benefits for the company

Access to the B2B market in support of social and healthcare workers and related care facilities.

Access to the consumer market also through distribution via e-commerce platforms.

By changing its position in the innovation landscape, the company gains a competitive advantage.

Additive manufacturing and sensors for smart heat exchangers

Introduction

Aidro specialises in designing and manufacturing hydraulic and thermal components for advanced industrial applications. By adopting additive manufacturing, it is able to provide high-performance solutions for key sectors such as aerospace, oil and gas, and precision mechanics.

The problem

Traditional heat exchangers are often complex and prone to wear and tear in extreme conditions. They are therefore unsuitable for high-performance applications that require lightness, compactness and reliability. In sectors such as aerospace and offshore engineering, the presence of welded joints increases the risk of failure and maintenance costs, thereby reducing efficiency and safety.

The solution

The project involved using metal additive manufacturing to create innovative heat exchangers that are lighter and joint-free. The new bio-inspired geometries optimise the heat exchange surface to improve performance and resistance. Integrating smart sensors enables critical parameters to be monitored in real time and predictive maintenance strategies to be implemented.

Technologies

Additive metal manufacturing

Bio-organic geometries for thermal optimisation

IoT sensors for monitoring temperature, pressure, deformation

Platforms for predictive maintenance and smart traceability

Desired impacts

The project contributes to the transition towards more sustainable and intelligent products, with reduced weight and volume of heat exchangers, greater operational reliability, and design flexibility. The modular, weld-free approach improves performance in critical environments, reducing downtime and operating costs.
Benefits for the company

Benefits for the company

Thanks to the introduction of additive manufacturing, Aidro has expanded its technology portfolio and competitiveness in high value-added markets. The new line of heat exchangers allows for greater customization and reduced maintenance costs, opening up new commercial opportunities internationally.

The specific objectives of the project

Development of innovative and sustainable components: design of a gasket and two valves for hydrogen distribution, manufactured using additive manufacturing and in accordance with circular design principles (reusable and recyclable).

Digitization and optimization of the supply chain: creation of a digital library to harmonize design, promote lean relationships with suppliers, and implement the “Just in Time” production model.

Support for regional innovation: the project strengthens the resilience of the local supply chain and falls within the strategic areas of “Advanced Manufacturing” and “Sustainability.”

The Results

Improved supply chain efficiency thanks to digitization, cost reduction, and shorter logistics times.

Greater valve safety, preventing hydrogen leaks.

Economic sustainability with scalable processes and just-in-time production.

Environmental sustainability thanks to recyclable, low-impact components.

Social sustainability with safer maintenance and reliable components for citizens and workers.
