Introduction

Nordmeccanica is a world leader in the production of laminating and coating machines for the flexible packaging sector. With a strong presence in international markets, the company is recognized for the high quality of its equipment and its focus on technological innovation.

The problem

The need to strengthen competitiveness and expand its presence in international markets led Nordmeccanica to develop a next-generation HMI platform based on the concept of the digital twin. Traditional technologies, relying on 2D models and non-integrated environments, have proven to be limiting in meeting market demands for usability, simulation accuracy, sustainability, and product development speed.

The solution

The project involves adopting the digital twin paradigm to innovate the machine design and development processes. Through the integration of 3D modeling, advanced simulation (AMESim), HMI software environments (TIA WinCC Unified), and PLM systems, a digital ecosystem has been created that enables intelligent supervision, virtual design, and predictive maintenance of the machines.

Technologies

Parametric 3D modelling and integration with PLM

Simulations using AMESim and digital twin tools

Advanced HMI platform (TIA WinCC Unified)

UI/UX validation and human-machine interface

HMI integration with machine control system

Impacts

Competitiveness: greater product innovation, increased exports and market expansion.

Health and Safety: reduced risks for operators and improved working conditions thanks to intuitive interfaces and predictive simulations.

Sustainability: lower environmental impact through the reduction of physical prototypes and optimisation of consumption.

Reshoring: strengthening the industrial attractiveness of the territory through enabling technologies and process digitalisation.
