Introduction
KONG S.p.A. is an Italian company specializing in the manufacture of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety equipment. The company has a long tradition in metalworking and the manufacture of carabiners and other tools for mountaineering, rescue, caving, boating, and working at height.
The problem
The project aims to increase user safety through accurate tracking of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). This makes it easy to monitor its use and life cycle, applying a new level of depth to the requirements of European Regulation 2016/425 and the technical standards applied.
This can be achieved by updating products and introducing cloud-based traceability systems, which will require adapting production processes. These changes will be significant because the production of safety devices requires careful manufacturing. Currently, a large proportion of Category III PPE (i.e. PPE that protects against or reduces the risk of serious or fatal injury) is subject to checks during production and use. Manual traceability is time-consuming and prone to human error, which could reduce the effectiveness of the PPE itself.
Technologies
Cloud computing for information storage and control
IoT systems for computerized device tracking (via NFC)
The computerization of device traceability through NFC technology, linked to a cloud database accessible from any platform connected to the internet, will greatly reduce management errors, enabling continuous monitoring of the status of PPE and its correct assignment, maintenance, and control.
The project will therefore provide support to various stakeholders:
The PPE user, who will be able to quickly consult the data
the person who carries out the inspections
Finally, automated functions can be integrated for calculating deadlines, minimum requirements, and orders.
Desired impacts
It strengthens the relationship between the main players involved in the life of the IPR, from manufacturing to use:
The manufacturer can upload the information and view the status of the PPE, ensuring privacy compliance.
The distributor can easily access the PPE specifications and notifications of recalls or withdrawals from the market, even if they apply to individual items.
The organization that owns the IPR can monitor inventory, employee equipment, status, stock levels, and checks carried out.
The user will be able to check the status of the PPE updated at that moment, without altering the data and without the need for access privileges.
The inspector responsible for the checks uses the information provided directly by the manufacturer and the user without the need for transcription. In this way:
You can inspect PPE without having to consult a paper archive.
Data transcription errors are almost eliminated
The information is updated in real time, allowing for efficient and effective control.
Benefits for the company
Improve device traceability, both internally and externally
Improve the perceived value of devices and simplify the work of inspectors, increasing your competitive advantage.
Increase the availability of information related to product use and lifecycle
