In carrying out its activities, Sky Italia is increasingly faced with managing a growing amount of long-term monitoring and operational data. This requires a more accurate and timely understanding of the operational infrastructure and planning for the management of complex events in order to optimize asset utilization and energy consumption and prevent performance degradation or failures.

Modern IT environments are increasingly complex and subject to constant change, making it difficult to maintain an up-to-date view of the infrastructure, especially for large organizations such as Sky Italia. Traditional methods based on manual analysis are no longer adequate, and standard solutions often fail to meet the specific needs of such advanced environments.

The EXPLAIN project is part of Sky Italia’s AIOps initiative. AIOps, short for Artificial Intelligence for IT Operations, combines large-scale monitoring data and machine learning to automate IT operational processes, including event correlation, anomaly detection, and causality determination.

EXPLAIN intends to pursue a series of objectives:

Innovate the management of monitoring data generated directly from the field or from dedicated systems with a format that integrates accurate data and synthetic models.

Automate IT topology discovery and updates with AI and LLM.

Use advanced correlation patterns to detect anomalies.

Predict accidents or performance deterioration and interpret operational patterns.

Adopt proactive and adaptive IT management, in line with Industry 4.0, with a view to improving efficiency.

Failure prevention and energy savings.

Improving competitiveness by improving resource management.

Decision-making and strategic planning through a holistic view of IT infrastructure.

Guide future investments and the evolutionary trajectory of IT infrastructure with the results of experimentation.

The EXPLAIN project aims to improve SKY Italia’s IT infrastructure management through advanced automation, reducing the need for manual intervention and improving the accuracy of data management and IT topology. This will enable greater proactivity in detecting and managing anomalies, reducing downtime and optimizing energy savings.
